Participation is open to current SfC members only. All entries must be original works of art. Submissions are limited to two pieces for each member.
SPECIFICATIONS
Artwork must be ready to hang, e.g. frame with picture wire and eyehooks. There is not a limitation on size of artwork. 3D pieces such as artists books are eligible and will be displayed in cases.
FEES
There is a participation fee of $15 for one piece and $25 for two pieces to help defray costs of art installation, reception, publications for the exhibit etc.
20% of sales of artwork will go to the Maloof.

ABOUT MINA: Mina Taylor has practiced calligraphy for over 40 years. For 20 years she ran an art show featuring 25 artists from southern California. In 1979, she founded and launched her calligraphic business: Mina’s Manuscripts & More. Taking on students and limited commissions, her current work can be seen at minas.manuscripts on Instagram. “I believe that calligraphic words of truth can inspire people in transition, in grief, in hopelessness, in joy, in all of life really- to think beyond their situation to eternal things."

WORKSHOP IS FULL
This is your opportunity to enjoy time in the virtual studio with former White House chief calligrapher, Rick Paulus, as he shares traditional methods, techniques and tricks of the trade as you move your own projects forward.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: The process of placing text on a page in a meaningful way can be a daunting leap for one who has never attempted to do so. This comprehensive studio work- shop is designed to introduce beginner and intermediate calligraphers to the process of creating a finished piece. Through a series of independent assignments, Rick will gently guide you through the steps of taking your work from concept to completion using easily acquired methods and processes. Demonstrations and guided exercises will introduce the use of watercolor, gouache, masking fluid, gold leaf, and a range of papers. Workshop will be recorded and available for two months.
LEVEL: Beginner to intermediate. Beginners should be familiar with the use of a dip pen. Knowledge of a formal hand is helpful but not required.
ABOUT RICK: Rick Paulus has been a calligrapher and a teacher for over forty years. He apprenticed for several years at the legendary Tolley Studios, in Washington, DC, before becoming the engrosser for the US State Department. In 1998, he was appointed chief calligrapher of the White House, where he remained for two presidents until, in 2006, he heeded the call of the wild and left Washington, DC to explore new adventures in nature and in art. Today, in addition to enjoying calligraphic explorations from his studio nestled near the shores of Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts, Rick is dedicated to sharing the knowledge gained through many years of studio production and experimentation to students young and old alike.

ABOUT THE SESSION: These sessions are led by members, sharing what they have learned. They do not claim to be masters. Members and guests may register for any session--there is no requirement to attend all sessions. The aim is to share knowledge with newbies and to provide a refresher for those with more experience. Barbara Close will lead us through writing Romans with a broad-edged pen. Barbara will be teaching a multi-series Roman class for us early next year--this is a taste.
We plan to record. Kristi asks that you remind her! Recording will be available for two months.
San Diego SfC hosts its Roman's Study Group most months, on the first Friday, with a hiatus over the summer and in December. You must sign up for each individual session so that we know how many are interested in this particular session.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: No matter how many years you’ve practiced Italic, it never hurts to brush up your skills! Italic can be tiny or large, italicized or upright, made with a broad-edge pen or a monoline tool. In this workshop we’ll cover the basics – proportion, pen angle, slope, stroke sequence, and spacing. We’ll review the minuscules as well as the majuscules, and discuss flourishing. Students will get tips on using a tiny nib, and Sue will share her favorite tools for creating beautiful Italic letters. SKILL LEVEL: Students must have some experience using a broad edge nib.
This workshop will be recorded and available for a month. Zoom invitation and handouts, if any, will be sent out a few days prior to workshop date.
ABOUT THE INSTUCTOR:
Sue Greenseth is a calligrapher and lettering artist from Portland, Oregon. She enjoys practicing all hands, but Italic is her favorite! Her background is in advertising design, and she has a long history of creating commercial lettering for national and international clients. Her work includes two film titles, many logo designs (including a magazine logo), and has been featured four times in the Letter Arts Review Annual Juried Issue. Sue loves breathing life into letterforms and animating words with a pen.

Larisa Grollemond, Assistant Curator of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts at the Getty Museum
"A Unity of Script and Image: The Getty’s Hoefnagel Manuscript"
The Getty’s Mira Calligraphae Monumenta (the Model Book of Calligraphy) is an incredible testament to the inventiveness of scribes and the aesthetic qualities of writing. The 16th-century court secretary to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, Georg Bocskay first created the manuscript in Vienna to demonstrate his technical mastery of the immense range of writing styles known to him. About thirty years later, Emperor Rudolph II, Ferdinand's grandson, commissioned Joris Hoefnagel to illuminate Bocskay's model book. Hoefnagel added fruit, flowers, and insects to nearly every page, one of the most unusual collaborations between scribe and painter in the history of manuscript illumination. This lecture will explore this exceptional manuscript, a true unity of script and image.
Larisa Grollemond has been Assistant Curator of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts at the Getty Museum since 2017 after earning her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research areas include late medieval and Renaissance French illuminated manuscripts and paintings, early printing, and modern medievalisms. Her exhibition projects have included Book of Beasts: The Bestiary in the Medieval World (2019), Blurring the Line: Manuscripts in the Age of Print (2019), The Fantasy of the Middle Ages (2022), Graphic Design in the Middle Ages (2023-2024), and most recently, Blood: Medieval/Modern (2024).

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Sending and receiving a creative hand made, professional and original greeting card is a treasure. In this workshop we will explore several different compositions, layouts and designs for your greeting card collection. We will create our own envelopes for our cards. Using a few different techniques, we will be using our gelli plate for creating the basis and fodder for the cards and envelopes. We will review a variety of different card styles and layouts while keeping the process simple and classic.

Workshop Description:
Hermann Kilian (1929 – 2004) was a German calligrapher, typographer and book designer whose work was epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. I have been studying his works and sharing my study of his built-up Capitals during the last five years, and I have never gotten tired of it. This time, I will share my study of his minuscules that has been lifting my calligraphy study.
This workshop starts from understanding traditional monoline minuscule - the Foundational hand Italic hand and English Round hand - that deeply relate to Kilian’s minuscule forms. Then we will analyze several of Kilian's unique minuscule forms, and his characteristic weaving layout and composition. We will trace some of his works and draw several alphabets’ with pencils, ruling pens, pointed pens, small edged nibs and our chosen tools. We will work on two or three design projects with his minuscules that suit your chosen text.
Once we have learned his forms, his way of design and layout, they will add vitality to our works with plenty of possibilities.

About Yukimi:
Yukimi Annand is a Japanese born calligrapher, living in California. Raised on a flower farm in rural Japan she developed a great appreciation of nature. Studies in visual communication design in Tokyo led to work in the graphic design field, mostly in corporate design. Yukimi was director of Takenobu Igarashi, a highly regarded design studio, before moving to the USA in the 1990s.
Introduced to Western calligraphy in 2000, Yukimi discovered a great passion for it that has remained with her to this day. Her work is diverse, covering every conceivable aspect of the craft. She is a skilled practitioner in all manner of scripts and her experience in the field of graphic design brings a wonderful aesthetic to her work. Equally skilled in book design and creation, Yukimi’s experimental work is often presented in this tactile form. For more than a decade Yukimi has taught in person and online around the world. Yukimi’s work has frequently been shown in Letter Arts Review as well as other calligraphic journals and books, and is held in many international art collections.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Good design, says artist Irene Au, is like a refrigerator—when it works no one notices, but when it doesn’t, it stinks. This workshop is designed to help artists of all skill levels who use letters and letterforms better understand composition and the elements and principles of design. You will come away with a better understanding of design essentials and some layout tips of special interest to lettering artists. The workshop will include many handouts, demos, and exercises to build your design skills. The three-session course will also include a review of work a couple weeks following the instruction to give you time to complete work. Details to Follow
ABOUT MIKE: Mike Gold worked as a commercial lettering designer for over 35 years, mostly in the social expressions business. But his real passion is exploring the corridors of calligraphy that have been less traveled, the path where words and letters are design elements with which to play with line, shape and form, where creating a visual statement is more important than writing a readable text. In both his professional and personal art, Mike breaks traditional rules to create contemporary, non-traditional work.
Mike has an M.A. in Visual Communications and has studied with many outstanding lettering and design masters over the years. Mike has taught around the country and at several international calligraphy conferences. His personal work has been featured in Letter Arts Review many times over the past 25-plus years. He has been a juror for the Letter Arts Review annual and his work is in many private collections, including the Berlin Calligraphy Archive. He is the author of Lines to Live By (available through John Neal, Bookseller), which is Mike's take on being a non-traditional calligrapher in the 21st century.
